Most of these works have received little attention, even though they constitute a valuable source for understanding the artistic influence of the Southern Netherlands on Spanish and Latin American art and society in this period. Indeed, the study of copies of Flemish masters sheds light on a number of art-historical issues, including the means of diffusion of artistic models, stylistic trends and the dynamics of the art market and the world of collecting. These copies are a valuable testimony to the political, commercial and cultural ties that existed between the Hispanic territories and the Southern Netherlands. | Aggiungi al Carrello |

Several chapters provide major re-evaluations of the career of Peter Paul Rubens as an artistdiplomat, based on previously neglected manuscript sources and a deepened analysis of the social and political environments in which he operated. Other contributors focus on Rubens?s contemporary court artists, such as Anthony van Dyck, Guido Reni and Diego Velázquez. In addition to providing original interpretations of several important paintings and painting cycles, the volume examines such topics as the evolution of personified images of nationality, representations of dynastic marriages, the material culture of royal bridal trousseaus, the importance of details of costume and colour to the visual codes of baroque courts, and the roles played by artists within court societies. Ranging across Western Europe, from England to the Low Countries, France, Germany, Spain and Italy, these essays demonstrate conclusively the subtlety and complexity of visual communication within early baroque court societies, which enabled artists to convey complex political messages through paintings. The contributors to this volume display a variety of methodological approaches, demonstrating many different ways in which historical research can be fruitfully integrated with art historical analysis to generate new insights into both the visual culture and the politics of baroque Europe. | Aggiungi al Carrello |

The aim of this publication on art and art production in Brussels in the period 1600?800 is to reconsider the art-historical position of Brussels as a major hub of activity and place of residence for courtiers and artists alike. Attention will focus on matters as diverse as literature, music, housing, and the guild system, besides which aspects of the art trade, style differentiation and case studies relating to individual artists will be discussed. In the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, the Habsburg Court was viewed as the supreme creative centre, where systems of symbols were forged and propagated that were designed to display both the artist?s craftsmanship and the ruler?s piety.

Edizione: | Brepols Publishers, 2012 | Collana: | Museums at the Crossroads | Tempi di rifornimento | Indicativamente procurabile in 15-20 giorni lavorativi | Info disponibilità | Rifornimento in corso | Prezzo di acquisto | € 55,00 | Descrizione | Rather than as a destructive moment in history, the Iconoclasm of 1566 in the Netherlands was the catalyst for a re-evaluation of (religious) art in the Low Countries. It forced painters to question the very nature of the artistic tradition they grew up in. Is it merely a coincidence that the art markets changed so swiftly after the Fall of Antwerp, that art theory in the Low Countries originated in the wake of Iconoclasm (De Heere, Lampsonius, ...), or that painting in the second half of the sixteenth century saw the impetus of new styles, genres, specialisations (Aertsen, De Beuckelaer, ?)? Iconoclasm forced people to think about art. The generation of painters active in the two decades between the Beeldenstorm and the fall of Antwerp did this by questioning the decorum of the work of their famous predecessors. This volume, with contributions by eminent specialists in the field, addresses some of these questions and by doing so marks the beginning of a re-assessment of one of the most fascinating and complex but also understudied periods in Netherlandish Art History. | Aggiungi al Carrello |
